The Palais Ideal du Facteur Cheval (Ideal Palace of Postman Cheval) is a unique architectural creation located in Hauterives, France. It was built by a French postman named Ferdinand Cheval between 1879 and 1912.
Cheval had no formal training in architecture or engineering, but he was inspired to build his palace after stumbling upon a particularly interesting-looking stone while on his mail route. Over the next 33 years, he collected stones of various shapes, sizes, and colors while on his route, and used them to construct his dream palace.
The palace is a blend of different architectural styles, including Gothic, Hindu, and Middle Eastern. It features intricate carvings and sculptures, as well as a variety of symbols and motifs that reflect Cheval's personal beliefs and interests.
The Palais Ideal du Facteur Cheval is now a popular tourist attraction, with visitors coming from all over the world to see this unique masterpiece of outsider art. In 1969, it was designated a historic monument by the French government, and in 1986 it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
