The Bamberg Old City Hall (Altes Rathaus) is the most iconic landmark of Bamberg and one of the most unusual town halls in Europe. Dramatically positioned on an artificial island in the middle of the Regnitz River, it appears to float above the water and is connected to the riverbanks by picturesque bridges.

With its colorful frescoes, ornate façade, and distinctive location, the building is a centerpiece of Bamberg's UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town and one of Germany's most photographed historic monuments.

According to local legend, the bishop of Bamberg refused to grant the citizens land for a town hall. In response, the townspeople drove piles into the river and created an artificial island on which to build their own civic building.

The current structure dates mainly from the 15th century, though it was extensively remodeled in the Baroque and Rococo styles during the 18th century. Over the centuries, it served as the center of municipal administration and symbolized the independence of Bamberg's citizens from ecclesiastical authority.
