San Michele in Foro is a church located in the historical center of Lucca, a city in Tuscany, Italy. The church is situated on the Piazza San Michele, which has been a center of civic and religious life in Lucca for centuries.
The church was built during the Romanesque period, in the 12th century. The façade is decorated with several sculptures and is considered one of the finest examples of the Romanesque style in Tuscany. The central part of the façade features a large statue of St. Michael slaying the dragon. The sides of the façade have rows of arches, which are decorated with sculptures and reliefs.
The interior of the church has a nave and two aisles, with several side chapels. The nave is covered by a barrel vault, while the aisles have cross-vaults. The walls of the nave are decorated with frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries. The high altar, located at the far end of the nave, is made of marble and features a painting of the Madonna and Child by the 15th-century artist Andrea della Robbia.
The church has undergone several renovations and additions over the centuries, including the construction of a bell tower in the 14th century and the addition of a Renaissance-style loggia in the 16th century. The church was damaged during World War II but was restored in the post-war period.
