Craco is a ghost town located in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. The town is situated on a steep hill, overlooking the Cavone River valley. The history of Craco dates back to the 8th century when it was founded by the Greeks. Over the centuries, it was ruled by various groups, including the Normans, the Angevins, and the Aragonese.

The town reached its peak in the 15th century when it became an important center for agriculture, commerce, and culture. It had a population of about 2,000 people, and many of its impressive buildings and churches were constructed during this period. However, over the next few centuries, the town faced numerous natural disasters, including earthquakes, landslides, and floods.

In the 20th century, the town was hit by an economic crisis, and many of its residents emigrated to other parts of Italy or overseas. The final blow came in 1963 when a massive landslide made the town uninhabitable. The government ordered the evacuation of the town, and the remaining residents had to leave their homes and possessions behind.

Today, Craco is a popular tourist destination and has been used as a filming location for many movies, including The Passion of the Christ and Quantum of Solace. Visitors can explore the deserted streets, admire the medieval architecture, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The town has been undergoing restoration work in recent years to preserve its unique heritage.
