The Colossi of Memnon are two massive stone statues located in the Theban Necropolis, near the modern-day city of Luxor in Egypt. These statues depict Pharaoh Amenhotep III, who ruled Egypt during the 18th dynasty of the New Kingdom period. The two statues stand about 18 meters (59 feet) tall and weigh over 700 tons each.
The Colossi of Memnon were originally located at the entrance of the Pharaoh's mortuary temple, where they guarded the king's tomb and symbolized his power and strength. The statues were carved from solid blocks of quartzite sandstone and are considered some of the largest and best-preserved ancient Egyptian statues in existence.
Over the centuries, the Colossi of Memnon have been affected by earthquakes, flooding, and other natural disasters, causing some damage to the statues. Nevertheless, they continue to be popular tourist attractions and are widely regarded as one of the most important cultural heritage sites in Egypt.
