The Basilica of San Vitale is an early Christian church in Ravenna, Italy. It was built in the 6th century AD during the reign of Emperor Justinian I and is considered one of the most important examples of Byzantine architecture and art. The church is famous for its stunning mosaics, which are considered some of the finest examples of Byzantine art in the world.

The church has a unique octagonal shape with a central dome and a lower apse at each end. The exterior of the church is relatively plain, with a brick facade and few decorative elements. However, the interior is richly decorated with intricate mosaics that cover the walls and vaulted ceilings.

The mosaics depict various religious scenes, including images of Jesus, Mary, and other saints. The most famous mosaic is the one depicting Emperor Justinian I and his courtiers on one side of the apse, and his wife Empress Theodora and her attendants on the other. The mosaics are known for their vibrant colors and intricate details, and are considered to be some of the most beautiful examples of Byzantine art in existence.

The Basilica of San Vitale was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, and is open to visitors year-round.
