Wadi al Hitan, also known as the Valley of the Whales, is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the Western Desert of Egypt, approximately 150 kilometers southwest of Cairo. It is known for its exceptional fossil record of the earliest-known whales, which lived over 40 million years ago during the Eocene epoch.

The site includes numerous fossils of whales, as well as other marine animals and land mammals, that provide important insights into the evolution of these creatures. The fossils are exceptionally well-preserved, with complete skeletons and even some soft tissues, and the site is considered one of the most important paleontological sites in the world for the study of whale evolution.

In addition to its scientific significance, Wadi al Hitan is also known for its stunning natural beauty, with dramatic rock formations, sand dunes, and desert landscapes. It is a popular destination for tourists and nature enthusiasts, who can explore the site on foot or by guided tour.

Wadi al Hitan was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2005, and efforts are ongoing to preserve and protect the site for future generations.
