The National Zoological Park, also known as the National Zoo, is a zoological park located in Washington, D.C., United States. It is part of the Smithsonian Institution and is home to over 2,700 animals of more than 390 different species.
The zoo was founded in 1889 and has been a popular destination for visitors ever since. It covers an area of 163 acres (66 ha) and is divided into several different exhibits, including the American Trail, the Asia Trail, and the Elephant Trails.
Some of the most popular animals at the National Zoo include giant pandas, Asian elephants, lions, tigers, cheetahs, and gorillas. The zoo is also home to a number of exotic and rare species, such as the kiwi bird, the sloth bear, and the Komodo dragon.
In addition to its animal exhibits, the National Zoo also offers a number of educational programs and activities, such as animal encounters, guided tours, and classes for children and adults. The zoo is open year-round, except for December 25th, and admission is free of charge.
