Potala Palace is the most iconic landmark of Lhasa, Tibet, rising majestically above the city from the Red Hill. With its massive white and red walls, golden roofs, and commanding presence, the palace is a symbol of Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan cultural identity. Once the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas, Potala Palace is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the highest palace complexes in the world.

The original palace was built in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo, but the present structure dates mainly to the 17th century during the reign of the Fifth Dalai Lama. The complex served as both a religious center and the political heart of Tibet for centuries. After the 14th Dalai Lama went into exile in 1959, the palace ceased to function as a residence and was preserved as a historical monument and museum.
