The National Museum of Art of Romania (MNAR) is a museum located in Bucharest, Romania. It is one of the largest and most important museums in the country, with an extensive collection of Romanian, European, and Oriental art.
The museum was founded in 1948, and its collection includes over 70,000 works of art from the 14th century to the present day. The collections are divided into six main categories: medieval art, modern and contemporary Romanian art, old international art, decorative art, graphics, and numismatics.
The medieval art collection includes objects from the 14th to the 17th centuries, including paintings, sculptures, and religious objects. The modern and contemporary Romanian art collection features works by prominent Romanian artists from the 19th century to the present day. The old international art collection includes paintings and sculptures from Western Europe, dating from the 15th to the 19th century. The decorative art collection includes ceramics, glassware, textiles, and furniture from the 15th to the 20th century.
The graphics collection includes over 10,000 prints, drawings, and photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries, with a particular emphasis on Romanian art. The numismatics collection includes coins and medals from ancient times to the present day.
The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, concerts, and other cultural events. The building itself is an architectural masterpiece, built in the neoclassical style in the early 20th century. It was originally designed as the Royal Palace of King Carol I, and later became the residence of the Romanian Communist Party. The museum was established after the fall of communism, and the building was restored to its original grandeur.
