Irazu Volcano is a massive stratovolcano located in central Costa Rica, near the city of Cartago. With an elevation of over 11,000 feet, Irazu is the highest volcano in Costa Rica and one of the most active in Central America.
Irazu has a long history of eruptions, with the first recorded eruption taking place in 1723. The volcano has had several major eruptions in the 20th century, including a large eruption in 1963-65 that deposited ash as far away as San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica.
Despite its recent activity, Irazu is considered a relatively safe volcano for visitors, and there is a national park and visitor center located near the summit that offers stunning views of the volcano and its surrounding landscape. Visitors can hike to the summit or take a scenic drive to the crater rim, where they can observe the massive crater and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding valley.
In addition to its geological wonders, Irazu is also known for its unique and diverse ecosystem, which is home to a variety of endemic plants and animals. The national park is a popular destination for nature lovers, and visitors can hike or birdwatch to their heart's content, taking in the stunning natural beauty of the volcano and its surroundings.
