The cathedral was built in the early 20th century by Tsar Nicholas II of Russia to serve the large Russian community that had settled in Nice. It was designed by the Russian architect Mikhail Preobrazhensky, who combined the Byzantine and Russian Revival styles to create a unique architectural style.
