The Skopje Fortress, also known as Kale Fortress, is a historic fortress located on the highest point of the city of Skopje in North Macedonia. The fortress was built during the 6th century AD, but was reconstructed and renovated several times over the centuries by various rulers including the Byzantines, Serbs, and Ottomans.
The fortress is situated on a hill overlooking the Vardar River and offers panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. It is one of the most important cultural and historical monuments in Skopje, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
Inside the fortress, visitors can explore the remains of the ancient walls, towers, and gates. There is also an archeological museum showcasing artifacts from the site and the surrounding area, as well as a small chapel dedicated to Saint Nicholas.
In recent years, the fortress has undergone extensive renovations to restore and preserve its historical and cultural significance. Today, it serves as a popular tourist destination and cultural center, hosting concerts, exhibitions, and other events throughout the year.
