The Old Fortress, also known as Stari Bar, is a medieval castle located on a hilltop overlooking the town of Bar, Montenegro. The fortress dates back to the 9th century when it was constructed by the Byzantine Empire. Over time, it was expanded and reconstructed by different rulers, including the Venetians, the Ottomans, and the Montenegrins.
The fortress played a significant role in the defense of the town of Bar and was attacked and destroyed many times throughout history. The most devastating attack was in 1878 when the Montenegrins bombarded and captured the fortress during the Balkan Wars. After the war, the fortress was abandoned and left in ruins for many years.
In recent years, the fortress has been restored and is now a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the ruins of the fortress, including the medieval walls, towers, and gates. The fortress also contains several churches and a mosque, which reflect the diverse religious and cultural history of the region.
Today, the Old Fortress is one of the most important cultural and historical landmarks in Montenegro and is a symbol of the resilience and strength of the people of Bar throughout history.
