The desert's unique landscape is the result of the cool sea currents that flow up the Namibian coast, creating a cool, misty microclimate that helps to support the unusual plant and animal life found in the region. Some of the most well-known species found in the Namib Desert include the Namib Desert horse, the Namib Desert elephant, and the Damara dik-dik, as well as a variety of reptiles and insects. Despite its harsh conditions, the Namib Desert is considered a valuable ecosystem, with efforts underway to protect it for future generations.
