Louvre Abu Dhabi is a museum located in the cultural district of Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The museum is a collaboration between the governments of Abu Dhabi and France, and is the first branch of the Louvre museum outside of France. It was opened to the public in November 2017.
The museum's collection is focused on world art, with an emphasis on works from different cultures and civilizations, from prehistory to contemporary art. The collection includes works from ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Greece, as well as Islamic art, and works by modern and contemporary artists from around the world.
The museum's building was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, and features a series of interconnected white cubes under a large dome that is made up of eight layers of metal and glass. The dome is meant to evoke the image of a traditional Arab medina, with light filtering through the perforated metal roof, creating a "rain of light" effect in the interior spaces. The museum also includes a 180-meter-long promenade along the waterfront, and a temporary exhibitions space.
The Louvre Abu Dhabi is part of a larger cultural district on Saadiyat Island, which also includes the upcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and the Zayed National Museum, which is currently under construction.
