The Faiyum Oasis is a large depression in the desert located in the Faiyum Governorate of Egypt, about 100 kilometers southwest of Cairo. It is an agricultural area and a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful natural scenery and rich history.

The Faiyum Oasis is fed by the Bahr Yusuf, a branch of the Nile River, and is home to several lakes and springs. The oasis has been inhabited since prehistoric times and was an important center of agriculture during ancient times. The Faiyum was also a major center of worship for the god Sobek, who was associated with the Nile crocodile.

The Faiyum is home to many ancient ruins, including the city of Crocodilopolis and the Pyramid of Hawara, which was built by Amenemhet III of the Twelfth Dynasty. The Faiyum is also famous for its collection of Roman-era mummy portraits, which were painted on wooden panels and placed over the faces of the deceased before burial.

Today, the Faiyum is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Visitors can explore the many ancient ruins and tombs, take a boat tour of the lakes, or enjoy the beautiful scenery of the oasis. The Faiyum is also known for its excellent birdwatching opportunities, with over 200 species of birds found in the area.
