Arles is a city located in the southern region of France, in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône. It is situated on the banks of the Rhône River and has a rich history that dates back to Roman times, as evidenced by its numerous ancient Roman monuments. The city is famous for its well-preserved Roman amphitheater, which was built in the first century AD and could accommodate up to 20,000 spectators. Other notable Roman monuments include the Roman Theater, the Alyscamps necropolis, and the Cryptoporticus.

Arles was also an important center for early Christian culture and has several churches and chapels, including the Church of St. Trophime, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city also played a significant role in the development of modern art, as it was home to Vincent Van Gogh for a period of time, and many of his most famous works were inspired by the city's landscapes and architecture. Today, Arles is a popular tourist destination, known for its rich cultural heritage, beautiful architecture, and vibrant arts scene.
