The Tower of Silence in Yazd is a circular structure located on a hilltop outside the city. It is a Zoroastrian funerary structure, also known as Dakhma or "Tower of Silence," where Zoroastrians placed their dead to be exposed to the elements and picked clean by birds of prey.

The tower is built in concentric circles, with the outermost circle containing the bones of the most recent dead. The next circle would hold the bones of those who had been exposed for a longer period, and so on, until the bones were eventually pushed into the center of the tower. The tower was built in such a way that rainwater would wash the bones down into a central well, which was filled with lime to hasten the decomposition process.

The practice of exposing the dead in the Tower of Silence was a traditional Zoroastrian practice and continued until the 20th century. Today, the practice has been banned by the Iranian government, and Zoroastrians in Iran now bury their dead in concrete-lined graves.

The Tower of Silence is a popular tourist destination in Yazd and offers a unique glimpse into the history and culture of the Zoroastrian community.
