Salar de Pedernales is a salt flat located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. It covers an area of approximately 1,200 square kilometers (460 square miles) and is one of the largest salt flats in Chile. The salt flat is located at an altitude of approximately 2,100 meters (6,900 feet) and is surrounded by the Andes Mountains.
Salar de Pedernales is known for its striking beauty and otherworldly landscape. The flat is covered in a layer of salt that has been shaped by the wind into various patterns and formations, and the salt itself is a brilliant white color that contrasts sharply with the blue sky above. There are also a number of small lakes and lagoons within the salt flat, which are home to a variety of bird species such as flamingos and Andean gulls.
