Pergamon, also known as Pergamum, was an ancient Greek and Roman city located in modern-day Bergama in Turkey. It was once the capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon during the Hellenistic period and later became part of the Roman Empire.

Pergamon was a center of learning, with a library that was said to rival that of Alexandria in Egypt. It was also home to one of the most important medical centers of the ancient world. The city is famous for its impressive architectural and cultural monuments, including the Pergamon Altar, which is now housed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany.

Other notable sites in Pergamon include the Asclepeion, a sanctuary dedicated to the Greek god of healing Asclepius, the Roman theater, the Library of Pergamon, the Temple of Trajan, and the Red Basilica, a massive temple dedicated to the Egyptian gods Serapis and Isis.

Today, Pergamon is a popular tourist destination and its ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors can explore the ancient city and its impressive archaeological remains, which offer a glimpse into the rich cultural history of the region.
