Mount Tavurvur is an active stratovolcano located near the eastern tip of the island of New Britain, in Papua New Guinea. It is part of the larger Rabaul caldera complex, which includes several other active and dormant volcanoes. Mount Tavurvur has a height of 688 meters (2,257 feet) and is known for its frequent explosive eruptions.

The volcano has a long history of activity, with recorded eruptions dating back to the 1700s. One of the most significant eruptions occurred in 1994 when a series of powerful explosions destroyed much of the nearby town of Rabaul and forced the evacuation of thousands of people. Since then, the volcano has remained active, with regular ash emissions and occasional small explosions.

Despite its frequent eruptions, Mount Tavurvur is a popular destination for tourists and hikers due to its scenic beauty and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can hike to the summit of the volcano and enjoy panoramic views of the caldera, the sea, and the nearby islands. However, due to the ongoing volcanic activity, visitors are advised to check with local authorities before planning a visit and to follow all safety guidelines.
