The city of Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire during the 14th to 16th centuries, and was one of the largest and richest cities in the world at that time. The Monuments at Hampi are spread over an area of more than 26 square kilometers and include more than 500 structures, including temples, shrines, palaces, and other buildings.

Some of the most notable structures at Hampi include the Virupaksha Temple, which is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and is the oldest temple in Hampi, the Vitthala Temple, which is known for its intricate carvings and musical pillars, the Hazara Rama Temple, which features scenes from the Hindu epic Ramayana, and the Lotus Mahal, a palace with a distinct Islamic-style architecture.

The Monuments at Hampi were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986 for their cultural significance and historical importance.
