It is one of the five islands that make up the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, named after Malaysia's first prime minister. The island is located off the coast of Kota Kinabalu and is easily accessible by speedboat or ferry.

The island is a popular spot for water activities such as snorkeling, diving, and swimming. Visitors can also go on island walks or simply relax on the beach. Manukan Island has several facilities including a picnic area, restaurants, and chalets for overnight stays.

One of the main attractions on the island is the Marine Ecology Research Centre, which is a coral reef conservation center that offers visitors the opportunity to learn about marine life and the conservation efforts taking place on the island. Manukan Island is also home to a few hiking trails that lead to scenic viewpoints with views of the surrounding islands and the sea.

Visitors to Manukan Island are advised to bring sunscreen, hats, and insect repellent, as well as proper water shoes for walking on the coral reef. The island is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm, and visitors must purchase a park entry ticket at the park office before entering the island.
