Mahabodhi temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India. It is one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world and is believed to be the place where Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment. The temple complex includes a 50-meter-tall brick stupa and several other Buddhist monasteries and shrines.
The Mahabodhi temple was built in the 3rd century BC by Emperor Ashoka and has undergone several renovations over the years. The current temple structure was built during the Gupta period in the 5th-6th century AD and is considered a masterpiece of Indian brickwork.
The temple is surrounded by a large stone railing and has four entrances, each facing one of the cardinal directions. The main shrine inside the temple contains a gilded image of Buddha in the "touching the earth" pose, which represents his victory over Mara, the demon of illusion. The temple also has a sacred Bodhi tree, which is believed to be a direct descendant of the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment.
