Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda, also known as the "Floating Rock Pagoda", is a popular Buddhist pilgrimage site located in the Mon State of Myanmar. It is situated on a limestone hill near the town of Hpa-An, which is approximately 270 kilometers southeast of the capital city of Yangon.
The pagoda is unique in its design, featuring a large boulder balanced precariously on the top of a smaller rock formation. The boulder is said to represent the head of the Buddha, while the smaller rock symbolizes his body. The natural phenomenon of the boulder appearing to float is caused by the way the rocks are balanced, creating an optical illusion that makes it appear as though the boulder is suspended in mid-air.
The pagoda is surrounded by a serene lake, adding to the beauty of the setting. Visitors can take a boat ride on the lake or climb up the steep staircase to the top of the hill to see the pagoda up close. From the top, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area.
Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda is an important religious site for both locals and tourists. Visitors are required to remove their shoes before entering the pagoda and must dress modestly. The pagoda is especially popular during the Buddhist festival of Thingyan, which takes place in April and marks the Burmese New Year.
