Kerkouane is an ancient Phoenician city located in northeastern Tunisia, near the city of Kelibia. The city was founded in the 6th century BCE and was an important trading center for the Phoenician Empire. The ruins of the city were discovered in 1952 and were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.

The city of Kerkouane is unique because it is one of the few Phoenician cities that has not been extensively modified by later civilizations. As a result, the ruins of Kerkouane provide an excellent example of the layout and architecture of a Phoenician city.

The city was built on a promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, and was surrounded by a defensive wall. The city had a complex street plan, with a central avenue leading to the city's main temple. The temple was dedicated to the goddess Tanit, who was the patron goddess of the city.

Kerkouane was an important trading center, and evidence of trade with other Mediterranean civilizations has been found in the city's ruins. The city was also known for its fine metalwork, which was highly valued by other civilizations.

Today, visitors can explore the ruins of Kerkouane, which include the remains of houses, temples, and public buildings. The site offers a glimpse into the daily life of a Phoenician city and is an important cultural and historical attraction in Tunisia.
