Diaolou are multi-story defensive structures found in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong. These towers were built by overseas Chinese in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a response to the increasing threat of bandits and armed gangs.

The towers were constructed in a wide variety of styles, and often included a mix of Eastern and Western architectural features. Many of the diaolou are built from reinforced concrete, while others were constructed using brick, wood, or a combination of these materials.

In addition to their defensive function, diaolou were also used as residences and community centers. Many towers feature intricate carvings, ornate balconies, and impressive views of the surrounding countryside.

Today, many of the diaolou have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites, and are popular tourist destinations. The most famous clusters of diaolou can be found in Kaiping and Jiangmen, but smaller groups of towers can be found throughout the province of Guangdong.
