David Gareja Monastery is a complex of rock-hewn monasteries located in the southeastern part of Georgia, near the border with Azerbaijan. The monastery was founded in the 6th century by St. David Garejeli, one of the 13 Assyrian monks who arrived in the country to spread Christianity.

The monastery complex consists of several chapels, churches, and living quarters that have been carved out of the rock. The most notable structures include the Lavra Monastery, which is the largest and oldest of the monasteries, and the Udabno Monastery, which is located on a rocky plateau overlooking the surrounding countryside.

One of the main attractions of David Gareja Monastery is the spectacular landscape that surrounds it. The area is known for its unique desert-like terrain, which features red cliffs, canyons, and rocky outcrops that provide stunning views. Visitors can also explore the nearby Kakheti wine region, which is known for its excellent wines and traditional Georgian cuisine.

It suffered greatly during the Soviet era, when many of its buildings were destroyed and its monks were expelled. Today, the monastery is open to visitors and is considered one of the most important cultural and religious sites in Georgia.
