Checkpoint Charlie was a border crossing point during the Cold War, located in Berlin, Germany. It was situated at the junction of Friedrichstraße and Zimmerstraße and was one of the most well-known and heavily guarded border crossings between East and West Berlin. The checkpoint was established in August 1961, following the construction of the Berlin Wall, and remained in operation until the wall was torn down in 1989.
Checkpoint Charlie was the site of several major events during the Cold War, including a standoff between American and Soviet tanks in October 1961 and the escape of East German border guard Conrad Schumann to the West in August 1961. The checkpoint was also a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world who came to witness the tense atmosphere and the stark contrast between the capitalist and communist worlds.
