Cap Spartel is a promontory located on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, about 14 kilometers west of the city of Tangier. It is the northwesternmost point of mainland Africa and is situated at the entrance of the Strait of Gibraltar, separating Africa from Europe. The name "Spartel" is derived from the Greek word "spartelon," meaning "to tear off," which is a reference to the treacherous currents that occur at the point where the Mediterranean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean.
The area around Cap Spartel is known for its scenic beauty, with cliffs overlooking the ocean and beaches nearby. Visitors can hike along the coastal paths, explore the surrounding caves, or take a boat tour to see the local wildlife, including dolphins and migratory birds. At the top of the promontory, there is a lighthouse that was built by the French in 1865 and is still in operation today. The lighthouse is accessible to visitors and provides panoramic views of the surrounding area.
