Anjar is an ancient city located in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon, about 58 km east of Beirut. It was founded in the 8th century by Caliph Al-Walid I of the Umayyad dynasty as a commercial center and military base, and it remained an important city during the Abbasid period.

The city was built in a grid pattern, which is unusual for the region, and the streets were lined with colonnades.
