Bassas da India is an uninhabited atoll located in the Indian Ocean and is one of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands. It is known for its rich marine biodiversity, with numerous species of fish, sharks, rays, turtles, and other marine life inhabiting its waters.
The atoll is approximately 10 km in diameter and encloses a lagoon. The land area of the atoll is only around 0.2 square kilometers, making it one of the smallest atolls in the world. The entire atoll is surrounded by a coral reef that is submerged during high tide.
Due to its remote location and lack of fresh water, Bassas da India has never been permanently inhabited. The atoll is only accessible by boat, and the French military maintains a small base on nearby Europa Island to provide logistical support.
The atoll is also a popular destination for scientific research and diving expeditions due to its unique and diverse marine ecosystem. However, access to the atoll is restricted to protect its fragile environment and ensure the safety of visitors.
