Akrotiri is a British Overseas Territory located in the eastern Mediterranean, on the southern coast of Cyprus. It is a small peninsula, covering an area of around 3.8 square miles (10 square kilometers), and is home to around 15,000 people, the majority of whom are military personnel and their families.
Akrotiri has a long and varied history, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Neolithic period. The ancient city of Kourion, which is located within the territory, was an important center of trade and culture during the Roman period. Akrotiri also played a key role in the events leading up to the modern history of Cyprus, with British forces establishing a base there in 1946 and using it to help quell the violence that erupted between Greek and Turkish Cypriots in the 1960s.
Today, Akrotiri is home to a large military base, which serves as a key staging area for British and international forces in the region. The base is also used for training exercises, and is equipped with a range of facilities, including a hospital, a school, and a variety of recreational amenities.
Despite its military focus, Akrotiri also has a vibrant civilian community, with a number of small villages and towns located within its boundaries. These communities are supported by a range of businesses and services, including shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.
Due to its location on the southern coast of Cyprus, Akrotiri enjoys a warm, Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot, dry summers. The territory is also home to a range of natural attractions, including sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, and a variety of plant and animal life.
