San Gimignano is a medieval hill town in Tuscany, Italy, located about 50 miles south of Florence. The town is famous for its well-preserved towers, which rise high above the town's red-tile roofs. At its height in the 13th century, San Gimignano had 72 towers, but today only 14 remain. The town is also known for its stunning views of the surrounding countryside and for its rich history, including its association with the important medieval poet Dante Alighieri. The main attraction in San Gimignano is its historic center, which is surrounded by ancient walls and is now a pedestrian-only zone. Visitors can wander through the narrow, cobbled streets, admire the beautiful architecture, and enjoy a gelato or a glass of local wine. The town is also home to several important museums and churches, including the Museum of Sacred Art, which houses a collection of religious artifacts and art, and the Church of Sant'Agostino, which contains a series of frescoes by early Renaissance artist Benozzo Gozzoli.
